My country, ’tis of–WHATTTT??!

Are we REALLY demanding an apology

From the President of Ukraine

After trying to shake him down

For half the mineral resources

Of his COUNTRY

In return for our support??

Haven’t we acted in bad faith

By acting like a Mob protection racket

When the real issue,

The crucial issue,

Is STOPPING THE AGGRESSION

Of the Putinistas?

An apology is in order, all right.

But since it is unlikely to come

From a pair of bullyboy draft-dodgers,

It will come from me.

I, Gary Bowers, Citizen

Of the United States of America,

Apologize on behalf of my wayward country

For unfair stances taken and acts performed

Since late January of this year, including,

But not limited to,

Our in-progress betrayal of Ukraine

And our NATO allies

For the sake of appeasing

The rapacious, murderous despot,

Vladimir Putin,

And his minions and ilk.

I acknowledge that the agenda

Of America’s current leaders

Is beyond shameful.

I pray that the United States of America

Of 2025

Does not sink further into its descent

Into unmistakable similarity

To Third Reich Germany

Of the 20th Century.

Sincerely,

Gary Bowers

Citizen of the United States of America

a long time ago i was a ten-year-old kid and i was going to new york with my family in a t w a airplane and we were going to spend a few days on the island of manhattan

and i had a next-door neighbor friend named david hilyard or it might have been hillyard and we hung out together a lot and i told him about the trip and in a combination of bigshot-itis and a genuine wish to somehow have him enjoy the trip too i told him i would buy him a souvenir

next thing you know there i was at the u n building which looked like a giant glassy cereal box and in the gift shop they had a ballpoint pen with the u n insignia on it

and i bought it for david but here’s the thing i never gave it to him

and in fact i avoided him all the way up to when he and his family moved away

and though i don’t know exactly why i betrayed him that way I do know it wasn’t because i wanted to keep the pen

my guess is i was messed up psychologically and there was a weird mental membrane blocking me and not only did i betray david but also the self i could have been had i more gumption

so I now unburden myself s little by saying i’m sorry not only to david wherever he is

but to little gary as well

2019 0925 wounders

This is a time of wounds, and wounding, and wounders. It is a time of betrayals and deception. Thank Goodness it is also a time when 16-year-old Greta Thunberg addresses the United Nations General Assembly with a voice of reason and challenge, a clear and direct message to the wounders of the world that the savaging must stop.

The White House just released a transcript of a conversation between Donald Trump and a representative of the Ukrainian government. Trump was soliciting that country’s help in digging up dirt on the son of Trump’s political rival, Joe Biden. Trump offered help from his own resources to backstop the efforts he wanted the Ukrainians to make.

This is all part of the tapestry of wrongdoing that Donald Trump and his administration have woven. They wanted dirt on Hillary Clinton, and they met with Russians–in TRUMP TOWER–to discuss it. Previously, Trump publicly asked Russian hackers to find dirt on Ms. Clinton via her e-mails. And his tweets since before the 2016 to the present day have included wounding swipes at hundreds (this is not hyperbole) of the persons, organizations, and other entities that Trump perceives as either rivals or enemies, including the intelligence community, members of his own political party, and the entire Democratic Party. Donald Trump is the Wounder-In-Chief.

Viewers will notice that this page has a slapdash, hurry-up-and-finish quality to it. I wanted to publish this page so that it would be contemporaneous with this week’s events, and so the last lines of the acrostic are so UNcalligraphic they look practically scribbled. But Thornton Wilder wrote, in The Bridge of San Luis Rey, my favorite book by anyone ever, “Style is but the faintly contemptible vessel in which the bitter liquid is recommended to the world.” So my page will not be redone…today…

Will Wounders Never Cease?

Wicked-clever weapon-making may use PVC
Wicked-evil felons have gone on a killing spree
Item that is made unsafe may lead to broken tibia
It goes international with rockets fired at Libya
Leave it undecided if Evolving is amiss
Lemon-freshened lab retrievers lend themselves to Bliss
Leprechauns and ne’er-do-wells have tickets on the barge
Low men on the Totem Poles prefer to live it large

mallet • palate

mordioux no a&p • and some “leaders” copped a plea • let us face it we’re in hell • left bereft no wares to sell • a euphemistic take’s a trait • that fair ignores the teeth that grate

About the open-mouthed fellow on the right: about forty years ago there was an album by King Crimson called IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING, and though I haven’t seen the album in many years, I would bet that my drawing is at least a secong cousin to the fellow on that cover.
