well, my mr. coffee died quietly two days ago/the on switch simply wouldn’t light up nor activate when pressed/so i being unhandy and incapable of repair slash resurrection called the time of death/and have emptied the reservoir and will give it an improper nonburial

and now I have a new coffeemaker/and have read the instructions/learning thereby that the manufacturers of this charming device/define five ounces as “one cup of coffee”/so i will get about two decent-sized cups per pot/which is ok

and I have just now followed the instructions/of first washing the pot with warm soapy water and rinsing/and next running a brew cycle without coffee/so as to clean its innards

and when i ran it/i learned that the new machine sounds like it dies an agonizing death by copd/as it yields the last fraction of an ounce of superheated water

its agony and final death-rattle sigh/worthy of shakespeare/who famously said

“Cowards die many times before their deaths;/The valiant never taste of death but once.”

may my new fellow-coward coffee machine/die a thousand histrionic deaths/before it really and truly and once and for all and irreparably/dies

kaf

kaf

is a letter on the arabic alphabet

and in the hebrew alphabet as well

and represents the k sound

and can mean spoon

palm

crown

or potential

.

kaf is also the first syllable

in kaffeeklatsch

which brings us to the photo above

which is of a coffee mug i made

on the 26th of march of this year

and glazed near the end of april

with three other mugs of similar shape

.

the glaze happens to correspond

to the darker part

of the color spectrum of coffee

and makes a tasty contrast with coffee

that has been laced with half&half

and blue agave syrup.

.

i made many mugs this spring

of various sizes

and made the serendipitous discovery

that the smaller-volumed mugs

are more suitable

for the first cup of coffee of the morning

giving a lift the same as with a bigger mug

yet with less struggle-to-finish

in order to get out the door in time

and that makes the flavor more savorable.

.

kaf is also delightful in reverse.

if you don’t believe me,

do a fak check!

I made these mugs in late March and have glazed them to look like the coffee they contain. In both mugs are eight ounces of Americano coffee enhanced with cream and brown-sugar Simple Syrup. It is my wildly optimistic pipe dream that I will one day offer the mug of her choice to a future Special Someone, so that we might sit across from each other at a breakfast table and sip from our coffee-glazed coffee mugs while enjoying each other’s peaceable company. Hope survives, steamy and eternal!

the engineer does not think of her coffee/as “hot”/but rather “cooling”/and not as “coffee”/but as a mixture of water/and ground bean byproduct/and 3ml of dairy extract somewhat denser than whole milk/and an unmeasured squirt of blue agave syrup/with a specific gravity greater than the rest of the mix/that has a certain insolubility such/that her drink will become sweeter with successive swallows/which is exquisite

her bed partner/lacking the background that includes terms like “threshold limits”/and “asymptotic approach”/and “under the metallurgical dome”/and “thevenin equivalent circuit”/and “chi-squared smoothing function”/enjoys HER hot coffee in a different way

hers is a magic vitalizing elixir/an alignment of planets and constellations/yum

the partners are good together/in a way not easily described in words

At long, long last my Residential Drawing Station is operational, and I have many to thank. The fluorescent drawing-table lamp was a gift from my parents more than forty years ago. The pencil was part of a package of pencils given me by my then-wife, Joni, about eight years back. The light tablet, a marvelous surface to draw on, came on a Christmas from my then-sweetheart, Denise. The Captain America shield/eraser was a freebie acquired at the Jack Kirby Birthday Celebration, courtesy of my friend Russ Kazmierczak, Jr. The Bookmans goodie bag is from my fabulous Steady Girlfriend, Joy. And the coffee? The coffee was, is, and always will be a Gift From The Gods.

The work in progress is signed and dated today, and therefore must be finished by midnight tonight. Got to get cracking. Thanks so much, everyone!!

I have heard and read that the most popular beginning for the lyrics to a blues song is “Woke up this morning…” I think I know why: every day is like a little lifetime, and when you wake up you are born.

the day be
gins with ligh
tened sky, with
coffee drip, with bright-hurt
eye–& when you
get a Breakfast
in you, time will let
the day continue.
