6 jan 2021/a mob surges toward the Capitol building/where vote certifications are being kept

the mob was urged to “fight like hell”/but the  phrase “peaceably and patriotically” was also in there

violence ensues

the man who urged watches/he does not interfere/though he knows full well/that all he has to do/is get in front of a microphone and say

“Hey, stop with the violence already. What part of ‘peaceably and patriotically’ didn’t you understand?”

no, he continues to watch. continues/to watch./he gets word/that some are chanting HANG MIKE PENCE!/not much later he texts a message.

the message is not “Knock it off, you guys! You are not being peaceable!”/no, the message boils down to “Shame on Mike Pence for not doing right by me!”

and much later he delivers a message via microphone./ part of the message is “Go home.” part is “We love you.”

the concept of “the elephant in the room”/is insufficient for the events/of 6 jan 2021.

many more than one elephant is required.

INKtober, day 6. Prompt: “Golden.”

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.krqe.com/news/ny-museum-offered-used-solid-gold-toilet-to-trumps/amp/

Fun fact: about  six years ago, when the Trumps were in the White House, they asked the Guggenheim Museum if they could borrow one of their Van Goghs for a party. A curator told them No, the Van Gogh was unavailable, but they would like to offer instead an 18-carat gold toilet by an Italian sculptor, titled “America.” Here’s a link:

And here’s the poem on my image:

****
golden

golden moment goldeneye
golden arches my o my
golden globes and golden…
toilet???
o m g that sure does
s[p]oil it!!!

he has had his golden hours,
golden swindles, golden showers,
but his golden-years bathroom business,
i feel,
will be conducted in a cell
in stainless steel.

Here’s hoping!

During the two official World Wars people made huge sacrifices for their country, and that not only included life and limb, but also road trips, certain foodstuffs on certain days, and–alas!–liberty, in the case of many Americans of Japanese ancestry.

During the Cold War, when there was fear of nuclear war, some people built fallout shelters and stocked them with canned goods and water, prepared to “shelter in place” until the devastation had ceased. And kids and adults alike were trained to “duck and cover” if they saw a blinding light. Never mind that this strategy was demonstrably ineffective–it was better than nothing.

But now, with a highly contagious and potentially deadly virus infecting all corners of the Earth, many of my fellow Americans cannot even be bothered to put on a sputum-blocking mask. The masks cost anywhere from near-nothing (a bandanna and two rubber bands) to a hundred-plus dollars, depending on how effective and/or fancy and/or stylish you want them to be. And many establishments give them away to their paying customers.

There is a direct correlation between the enforcement of mask-wearing and the halting of the spread of COVID-19. That many in the US ignore the correlation is partly due to the maskless example President Donald Trump sets. He has turned a public-health issue into a political issue, even though back in February he scorned the Democratic Party for “politicizing the Coronavirus.” Sadly, even his detractors have been so desensitized by his daily-basis hypocrisy that it is hard to work up outrage any more.

This has been a year of such bombardment of calamity, in fact, that people are flat-out getting used to apocalyptic conditions. As so today, triggered by a childhood memory of a “Safety Walk” in which we grade-schoolers were encouraged to “Stop, Look, Listen” before crossing the street, I flashed on the phrase “Stop/Look/Listless” as being more endemic to our situation now. And so this acrostic came to be.

So GROUNDLINGS gasp & swell
Succumb to slouched ennui

Tympani BOOM? O wells
Tsk not, mon cher petit

Oppression’s Oddly DULL
Oft RUMOR ONLY, see

Per PELIKAN & gulls
Pretend a keepsake frees

Those last two lines are a bit obtuse. Pelikan is a brand name for the India ink I used when learning to draw with a crowquill pen. “Gull” is not only a bird but a verb that means “to fool [someone].” And what kind of keepsake makes someone feel free? Could be a St. Christopher medal, popular in the late 1960s. Patron saint of Travelers. Don’t leave home without him! 🙂

Stay Safe, my friends. Fighting Listlessness will help.

There’s a plan this evening for my former wife Joni and our daughter Kate to bring me a green corn tamale with green sauce from La Piñata, a restaurant we’ve frequented since last century.

Kate will knock on my apartment door. I will wait ten seconds, then open the door. Kate and I will wave to each other, and then she’ll get back in the car with Joni while I take the meal they brought me inside.

Until this crisis is over, we must be ultra-cautious. We want to stay alive.

And yet two weekends ago there was a barbecue in the South where no restrictions applied. And just yesterday law enforcement had to chase thousands off a Florida beach.

Americans have been badly misled by our 45th President, Donald Trump. His ill-chosen words–“new hoax!” among many–lulled the US into inaction at a crucial time. Yet he still feels entitled to point his finger at a journalist and say “You’re a terrible reporter” when the reporter invited him to say something to reassure the American people.

HE is terrible. He should not be President. He should be behind bars for, at the very least, reckless endangerment which is costing lives.

2019 0925 wounders

This is a time of wounds, and wounding, and wounders. It is a time of betrayals and deception. Thank Goodness it is also a time when 16-year-old Greta Thunberg addresses the United Nations General Assembly with a voice of reason and challenge, a clear and direct message to the wounders of the world that the savaging must stop.

The White House just released a transcript of a conversation between Donald Trump and a representative of the Ukrainian government. Trump was soliciting that country’s help in digging up dirt on the son of Trump’s political rival, Joe Biden. Trump offered help from his own resources to backstop the efforts he wanted the Ukrainians to make.

This is all part of the tapestry of wrongdoing that Donald Trump and his administration have woven. They wanted dirt on Hillary Clinton, and they met with Russians–in TRUMP TOWER–to discuss it. Previously, Trump publicly asked Russian hackers to find dirt on Ms. Clinton via her e-mails. And his tweets since before the 2016 to the present day have included wounding swipes at hundreds (this is not hyperbole) of the persons, organizations, and other entities that Trump perceives as either rivals or enemies, including the intelligence community, members of his own political party, and the entire Democratic Party. Donald Trump is the Wounder-In-Chief.

Viewers will notice that this page has a slapdash, hurry-up-and-finish quality to it. I wanted to publish this page so that it would be contemporaneous with this week’s events, and so the last lines of the acrostic are so UNcalligraphic they look practically scribbled. But Thornton Wilder wrote, in The Bridge of San Luis Rey, my favorite book by anyone ever, “Style is but the faintly contemptible vessel in which the bitter liquid is recommended to the world.” So my page will not be redone…today…

Will Wounders Never Cease?

Wicked-clever weapon-making may use PVC
Wicked-evil felons have gone on a killing spree
Item that is made unsafe may lead to broken tibia
It goes international with rockets fired at Libya
Leave it undecided if Evolving is amiss
Lemon-freshened lab retrievers lend themselves to Bliss
Leprechauns and ne’er-do-wells have tickets on the barge
Low men on the Totem Poles prefer to live it large

In 2016 the most powerful office in the United States of America was hijacked by an opportunistic liar and a hostile foreign power. My country must undo the awful damage that followed. I am grateful that steadfast, decent patriots such as Robert S. Mueller are here for us.

Gold is versatile, being malleable, ductile, and conductive. Its true value might be more in the realm of symbolism, though. Most of us gold-owners want more, feeling better off with each additional acquisition. But there are those for whom a drawerful of Kruggerands is not enough . . .

Here are the words. Note that Ringolevio under slight name variations is a sort of combination of Tag and Hide-and-go-seek, originated in one of the New York City boroughs. Coventry is a place in England that has come to symbolize shunning, banishment, or quarantine.

Long ago and very early in his career the underground comics legend Robert Crumb drew a frog looking mournfully at the viewer and saying “‘ ‘Tis sad.” Decades later the President of the United States ended quite a few of his limited-character assessments with the word “Sad.” Crumb has made it clear in more than one of his creations that he regards Donald Trump as a personification of Evil.

America’s President and Commander In Chief of its armed forces is now in Helsinki, misrepresenting his country with abandon. My deeply spiritual friend Suzy Jacobson Cherry is viewing this latest development with such alarm that she posted on Facebook this message: “Everybody. Start writing down your memories of the America that has been. Just in case it isn’t again.”

Suzy’s message reminds me of the end of the play CAMELOT, and Arthur’s admonitory instruction to a stripling in hopes of somehow keeping the memory of Camelot alive.

I love Suzy, and though I think our beloved country will be reunited and healed, I thought it would be valuable to do as she says, as thoroughly as I could.

America has survived many crises. We can survive this one as well, if we get back on the track of E Pluribus Unum, and Liberty and Justice for All.
