On this page are four acrostic poems and a scattering of images. In all the images are indications of Gamesmanship, a few involving chess pieces. One image has a horse as background, a kissing couple framed by the horse, and three fuzzily-defined chess pieces in front of the couple. There’s also a tennis player waiting for a serve; a balding man flanked by Queens; a soaring hawk and a gliding parasail; two marathoners, one a runner and one a wheelchair athlete; and a hand grasping a long pencil–the last a bit of Draughtsman Versus Blankpage gamesmanship.

The acrostics go from the semisilly to the earnestly serious (Business). Here are their words:

Dire Need

DESTINY may frown or grin
If the effort’s genuine

Foci are more than one Focus. Can they be wise? I was intrigued by the notion that they could, and then all of this spilled out.

Lorenzo De’ Medici, called Il Magnifico, was a wealthy art patron who sponsored both Leonardo and Michelangelo. I think he did more good than harm. I Eff him chiefly to achieve the near-synchronicity of S – Y – N – C and F – O – L – D. No one in the Universe has ever achieved this, exactly. If I hadn’t done over a thousand acrostics in preparation, I wouldn’t have been able to do it either.

Tread Water…Miracle…Water Tread

For a long time a friend of mine was following “A Course In Miracles.” Their definition of Miracle: “A change in perception.”

The pH of seawater happens to be identical to that of human blood. Coincidence?

I do not consider myself a Christian but I am a big fan of some of the things Jesus was said to have said and done; and on occasion I have cheerfully invoked the thanksgiving prayer “Rub a dub dub–thanks for the grub–Yaaaaaaaay, JESUS!”

I am also a big fan of s. harris and his many intelligent and yet belly-laugh-demanding cartoons. Check him out sometime, if you haven’t–he’s Miraculous!

Up all night, wanted to post before going to bed, looked in vain for “Molybdenum Demon” from the archives but found this instead. Artificionados will recognize the nod to Marcel Duchamp and his “Nude Descending a Staircase.” I so wish Duchamp were alive and a next door neighbor of mine; but I wish a lot of stuff outside the Real.

Here are the words to “Dude Descending a Dateslope,” a bastardized acrostic that reads “Descent of you” on the left and “TWO Double Aught Eight” on the right:

This weekend Denise and I have the pleasure of the company of Denise’s twin grandchildren. They are known colloquially as Sissy and Bubba, and they are capital-A Adorable. My drawing of them does not do them justice.

Here are the words to the double acrostic, which is a ‘strict’ acrostic, meaning the characters strings comprising each line are all of the same length.

A couple of days ago a dynamic duo named Beth & Paul sold me an oak desk/hutch they’d advertised on Craigslist. The hutch is eminently drawable but needs company; thus this page was born. It is a sometimes thinly, sometimes thickly disguised celebration of puns and other word-association sorties, sorta. (Like those last two words.) (Like those last two words?)

Here is the quadruple-acrostic transcription:

Fan + Taz + Sum = Phantasm

The Fan is the fan in my study. Taz is the Tasmanian Devil, with which I’ve taken a couple of liberties, but nowhere near as much as the Looney Tunes folks took, bless them. The Sum is a summation, derived from withered memories of first-semester calculus class of more than half my life ago. It all makes weird sense if you think of the fan as a disseminator of etheric force, Taz as apocalyptic primality, and the Sum as the glide-path approach to an unreachable asymptotic discontinuity.
