my adult-life home town was named after a mythic bird who was periodically conflagationally consumed and then was reborn from ash

but a spreading fungus is a more apt comparator

aerial maps over time show urban development filling topographical nooks and cartological crannies

and photos over time of camelback mountain taken from east of 40th street and south of camelback road show expensive houses climbing the mountain like lurch-stepped hikers

.

climate change has amped the furnace roar of this Infernal paradise

and entrickled the cascade of Verde salt and Colorado rivers

and new residents migrating from California to escape wildfires are just as thirsty as the rest of us

.

this is my home and my life

but i have moved before

once upon a time certain honorees

were given a key to the city

by the city’s grateful mayor

in phoenix arizona where i now live

my town waited till 2019

and gave its first key to randy johnson

johnson has become a photographer

but in the fall classic of 2001

he won the world series for the arizona diamondbacks

he was our paul bunyan

stilt-leggedly striding to the pitcher’s mound

a lawnmower mowing down the opposition

he killed a pigeon once

fastball turning an unlucky bird to feathers

the ball he threw was also ruled dead

so we gave this freak of nature a free key

and phoenix became the land of the freak,

home of the bravo, in the key of d-backs

One of the blessings of being poets in the Valley of the Sun is that we have in our midst a talented, hard-working, generous Superstar.  How talented? Read her poetry and gasp. How hard-working? Try teaching for twenty years while caring for a child on the autistic spectrum. How generous? She is lavish with her time, having hosted and/or participated many events, both live and on Zoom; lavish with her praise, as I found out when I did an illustration for her publication The Revolution; and lavish with sharing her wisdom, as exemplified by her series of spot lectures under the umbrella “Ars Poetica.” (Latin for “Art of Poetry” and the title of an awe-inspiringly contradictory poem by Archibald MacLeish. Its first line is “A poem should be palpable and mute” and yet the poem is not Mute at all.) (I long ago abandoned my ambition to be any sort of Poet Laureate, but I think I’m an excellent candidate for Arse Poetica. 🙂 )

Rosemarie believes that writing poetry is therapeutic, and frequently she hosts a Therapeutic Poetry workshop. I’ve written a few poems exactly because she says so.  Under that aegis the poems become intensely personal.

In a wonderful demonstration by the Universe that sometimes miraculously fine and good things can and DO happen, some time ago Rosemarie became the first Poet Laureate of Phoenix, Arizona. She was the perfect choice.
