My sweetheart Donna Sue Atkins and I left Phoenix, Arizona on the 4th of July. We are now living together in her house in Toledo, Ohio, and I now have an Ohio driver’s license and my car has an Ohio license plate. But it took till this week for me to buy some clay, and just yesterday I made my first clay vessel in the garage of my new residence. It is the classic, basic Pinch Pot, made using a technique at least ten thousand years old. An Ohioan potter is born!
last month he was an arizonan and a phoenician
now he is becoming an ohioan from toledo
because love is grand and of colossal power
and the woman is lovely and kind and playful
..
leaving one community for another is not easy
it is an uprooting that includes many goodbyes
there is a hint of the funereal
with an unspoken “i will never see you again”
..
he does not miss the hellish heat
he sees the d-backs from a distance
he dines on broiled embellished meat
new friends will have some fun his stunts
..
it might be nice to be a buckeye
but this guy’s still a desert rat
and yes, it’s me and with some luck i
like ohio, trim my fat.
